Darren Bertin, Waco Criminal Attorney

Darren Bertin is a seasoned trial attorney at Dunham & Jones with a legal career spanning more than two decades across both civil and criminal law. Licensed in Texas since 1999, Mr. Bertin has handled complex litigation in state and federal courts throughout Texas and has tried over 100 jury trials to verdict as both a prosecutor and defense attorney.

Mr. Bertin's diverse legal background includes service as an Assistant District Attorney for the 52nd Judicial District in Coryell County, where he prosecuted a broad spectrum of felony cases. He also served as Director of the Galveston County Justice Center, where he implemented county-wide reforms including a jail population tracking system, a collections recovery initiative, and improvements to the county law library—all of which generated millions in cost savings and increased efficiency for the court system.

Earlier in his career, Mr. Bertin founded and managed private law firms focused on plaintiff’s trial work and general litigation. His casework has included personal injury, employment law, civil rights, contract disputes, and criminal defense—securing significant results in both bench and jury trials. His verdicts and settlements include multiple seven-figure outcomes.

Mr. Bertin holds a Juris Doctor from Mercer University School of Law, where he earned multiple AmJur Awards and served as Associate Justice on the Honor Court. He also holds a Master of Theological Studies from Duke University and a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy from Louisiana State University. His academic training in ethics and critical reasoning informs his practical approach to client advocacy.

A committed public servant and advocate for attorney wellness, Mr. Bertin was awarded the Presidential Citation Award by the State Bar of Texas in 2016 for his contributions to the Texas Lawyers’ Assistance Program (TLAP). He currently serves as Vice-Chair of TLAP’s Steering Committee and is a frequent speaker at CLE seminars, bar association events, and civic forums across Texas.
